630am, beat the heat run finally.  And finally I got myself out there although I dragged myself out there.  Legs, meaning calves and hamstrings extremely tight, burning pain to my left toes, and numb-like feels in places.  Obviously, lower back problem cause now after resting my back is throbbing.  Will try heat pad soon.  I have had this issue before on downhill runs, especially.  I also go through a period of almost 24 hours of peeing like over 1-2 times per hour.  I have ignored the professionals advice to check further for a tethered cord (MRI shows a lower than normal cord and this goes with the malformation I had surgery for on my brain).  I figure I have it and I would refuse treatment anyway (which is to surgically detether my cord that is tied to my sacrum, not ready for open spine surgery again).  I flew all the way to NYC to have them tell me that I needed to have further testing and that I have all the symptoms of a tethered cord.  This was June 2008.  I threw away the order for the test which is a voiding test, to test if I am able to empty my bladder all the way or not.  Obviously not since Monday night at work I went over 12 times to the bathroom, no joking.  This happens more often after downhill runs which strain my spinal cord, and everyone elses for that matter.  I feel like I have to pee the entire race, annoying but normal for me.  I am sure you all wanted to hear all this.  Its the blog in me.  My life is an open page : D.    9.77 miles at 8:38 pace.

That tethered cord thing doesn't sound fun. How does it effect the ineffective voiding/emptying of your bladder? Obviously you felt the urge to go; but no neuromuscular control?

For the first 6-12 hours after running a marathon or hard long run, I find myself peeing A LOT, like every 45 min. It's like the kidneys shut down during the run and all of a sudden work overtime; plus I tend to hydrate a ton after the run.

Hope you recover well. That's a nice mileage for first run since race day. Glad you were able to run in the cool of the morning.

Hi Smooth. That is good to hear, so I am validated in not getting tested. I gain like 5 pounds of water weight the first few days after a hard run and then pee it off for days too but the problem is that my back and legs to my feet go numb, have burning pain and the front of my stomach is patchy numbness. The tethered cord is like a puppet on a string held tightly in place. So with each stretch of my leg the cord is so tight it can't stretch far and puts pressure on the spinal nerves coming out in those regions, ie my bladder. I feel the urge to go but go tiny amounts then immediately feel like I have to go but can't but then wait and then can then can't etc.... I have been dealing with burning pain down my spine but has greatly improved after the surgery. Headaches not so much, but getting better. I really think I am getting stronger with dealing with it. Running is my out, after a few miles pain is relative. Endorphins are free medication with the benefits of exercise and meeting lots of friends. Can you believe I am doing the Speedy Spaniard Friday? Whatever. What have you decided? If I feel good I will try for a fast run, if not I will try 7s for a PR anyway.

Wow Julie you are amazing I can't believe how amazing of a runner you are, especially after all you have been through and still must deal with! A true survivor and overcomer! Great job getting out there and getting a run in today!
